Provide a brief summary, using paraphrasing, of the work. Announce the work and the author. Use third person and present tense. Avoid contractions, first person, and second person. Include major points and any minor points that will help your reader understand the piece. Remember, your reader has not and likely will not read the piece. It is up to you to provide the important points. The summary can take one or two paragraphs. Avoid using any quotes from the work.
Summary is only a very small part of this assignment. Your task is to analyze the rhetorical strategies and techniques and comment on their effectiveness.
Identify the author’s purpose (to persuade, to inform, to entertain).
For analysis, choose three (3) rhetorical elements (ethos, logos, pathos, tone, repetition, imagery) you believe the author uses in the text. Identify what you think the author’s thesis is.
Use third person and present tense. Avoid contractions, first person, and second person. When discussing the rhetorical elements, provide examples (quotes) from the piece. Remember to use the “quote sandwich” and MLA format for in-text citations. The analysis should take at least two paragraphs.
This is not the place to express your ideas on the issue. Focus on the author’s writing and how effective it is. Avoid focusing on the content and whether you agree or disagree. You can add that information in the final paragraph.
You do not have to analyze every single feature of the work. For example, a writer may use expert testimony, statistics, analogy and real examples to develop the article. However, you may choose to write on only the use of expert testimony and real examples because they are the most notable features.
The response should be two paragraphs. In the first one, discuss the following: Has the author reached her goals? If she is trying to persuade a specific audience, has she accomplished that task? If she has not, then why not? Determine the author’s bias. Determine the author’s intended effect on the audience. Avoid contractions, first person, and second person. Create a paragraph of text; in other words, do not simply answer questions or address the instructions. Avoid using any quotes from the work in this section.
In the second paragraph, you can use first person and provide your opinion. In this paragraph, discuss your opinion both of the author’s writing and of the message. Avoid “I think,” “I feel,” “I believe,” or similar text. Since you are the author, there is no need to announce that what you are writing is your opinion.
There is a Section Break (Next Page) after this line. Please do NOT delete it!
