EDGE Essay Exam

Our goal with this exam is to assess this learning outcome by asking you to demonstrate entry-level knowledge about the nature and scope of the relevant park, recreation, tourism or related professions and their associated industries;

Background: One of the joys of being a park, recreation, and tourism management student (and future professional) is the opportunity and responsibility you have to educate and advocate on behalf of the discipline. We know our field is very important to individuals and society and sometimes we need to explain the nature and scope of its importance to others. This exam requires you to consider the importance and significance of the PRTM professional its broadest form. How does PRTM impact society and the individual?

Assignment Requirements: Earlier in the semester we asked you to select an individual who is extremely important to you (parent/guardian, grandparent, significant other, best friend, etc.) and compose a concise and persuasive letter explaining why leisure, recreation, and play and the professional delivery of those services are so important to individuals and therefore, society. It is now the end of the semester and you have been exposed to the breadth and depth of PRTM, so you have more experiences and information to provide a more informed explanation. For this exam, you will choose one of the following essay questions listed below. You should compose an answer that reflects the work you did earlier in the semester as a base, expand upon your thoughts and address the elements asked for in the essay.

Please submit in Canvas by 11:59pm on Tuesday, Nov. 24. NO LATE SUBMISSIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED.

Formatting requirements for essay:

12 pt font

1inch margins

Number the pages including the citation page

Inclusion of outside resources

Word count: Minimum 1000; Maximum 1500 (not including references)

You have travelled many miles to meet an ancient guru who lives in a cave at the peak of Mount Rekcut and you have finally arrived.  You ask the single most important question in the universe: What was I supposed to learn from EDGE? She says the answer depends on each individual but can always be summarized in a six-word phrase.  Her six words are “The way to build better people.” She then spends the next 36 hours explaining what that means. Now, it is your turn. What is your six-word phrase (it must be different) and how does it capture the comprehensive and all-encompassing nature of the PRTM career paths and how we impact individuals and society? (Do not merely list six words such as different career paths or lecture topics. Use a phrase that makes sense!). She will also not be pleased with a brief answer. Further, she will not be convinced with answers that do not integrate three or more topics from your EDGE journey with possible future career paths within PRTM.  Gurus demand thought, insight, depth, detail and many examples.How does PRTM impact society and the individual?

• A B range letter…meets the requirements…

o   Adequately answers ALL portions of the essay question

o   Applies some depth and specificity to integrating at least three topics

o   Reflects university level writing (proper spelling, grammar, flow, and style with few errors)

• An A range letter…

o   Goes above and beyond the above requirements, bringing in particularly interesting examples, excellently using terms/ideas, making important connections etc.

o   Applies great depth and specificity to integrating at least three topics

• A C range letter…

o   Is missing one or two of the above requirements

o   Applies little depth or specificity to integrating at least three topics

• A D range letter…

o   Is missing three or four of the above requirements
