Why college should be free

Public Universities should be Free

Public universities should be free as the “public” in the name suggests. This should not be debated whether public universities should be open; instead, it is common sense. However, the main function of public universities has gradually changed. The writer gives a brief history of how public education began. The old Deluder Act that was passed by Massachusetts Bay Colony stated that once a township population grew to fifty households, they were to select one person to teach their children (Bady, 2012). The writer continues to the second paragraph to state that Americans have forgotten public education’s real concept. He says that why should it be public education if it is not free. The change in the public universities’ system of running has evolved over the years. Their vision has also changed to become more of profit-centered rather than ensuring that the public’s citizens are educated. Tuition fees have increased to a level they can be compared to that of private universities. Furthermore, during the days when his parents were studying, it was easier to contrast private and public universities. His parents went to public universities as they were affordable, whereas private universities were not (Bady, 2012).

The writer notes that public universities were institutions whose doors were open to all who wanted to continue higher education. Furthermore, he defines the current public universities as private institutions operated by the state similar to businesses. The common objective of public universities has changed; research projects are now mostly used to acquire funding. Public universities are currently admitting more international students and few local students to obtain funds. The writer states that the number of out-of-state students at the University of California has more than doubled over the past decade.

Furthermore, the University of Michigan has also been affected the most have an admission rate of 40 percent of out-of-state students. The current public universities must operate as businesses to survive.

The writer elaborates more on the concept of public and private universities by using the open and toll roads. As suggested, the idea is whether the road is open to everyone and anyone or whether it is specifically made for only a specific group of people capable of driving on it. This applies to universities; a university is considered to be public only if the people who need its functions are capable of doing so (Bady, 2012).

The writer captures the emotions of the reader through the phrase, “When there are not enough classrooms, on the other hand, the state no longer builds new universities; it simply charges more.” (Bady, 2012). This shows the neglect of the public sector of education by the state. The government has abandoned its objective to educate its people and convert public universities into profit-making organizations. The writer is influential through his work as he gives facts on the public universities’ current state.

The contrast between public and private universities in the present century is not much. Public universities no longer have an interest in ensuring they meet the growing population’s demands in terms of education. However, they are more focused on raising money for their operations and from profit (Bady, 2012).

The writer uses writing to evoke emotions on how the public sector of education has been changed. The evolution of public universities has taken place slowly over the past decades, causing it to be more expensive. The concept of public education is that it should be free and accessible to all general members.

This perception has been changed by greedy systems that run the state functions. They have turned public universities into profit-making organizations. Furthermore, the numbers of out of state students have increased by large over the years which is largely focused on fund raising rather than providing quality education. The writing reasoning is also logical as it uses real-life examples such as the open and toll roads. It compares people who expect the right to drive on any highway as deluded. The evidence offered across the writing supports the evolution of public universities.
