Philosophical and historical background of law enforcement at the federal, state, county, city, village / town, and township levels, as well as special enforcement and institutional law enforcement. An introduction to contemporary police organizations and methods of operation.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

At the conclusion of this course the student will be able to:

Describe the tactics, techniques, methods, and practices of contemporary law enforcement and American policing.
Identify various duties, responsibilities and diverse roles of law enforcement and types of law enforcement duties and agencies.
Describe the historic foundations and culture of law enforcement and American policing.
Critically analyze and discuss current events, trends, and issues involving community, Statewide, National, and international law enforcement and crime control tactics, techniques, methods, practices, and theories.

Research Paper [10%]

The purpose of the paper is to illustrate understanding of course-related material beyond what is described in the text. Each student will write a 7-10 page research paper.
