Essay 2 (Intertextual Essay) asks you to write an argumentative (thesis driven) essay that explores a theme or issue where you put two authors/class texts in dialogue and discuss how their ideas connect (2 drafts worth 0-10).

In addition to continuing to revise the essay, you will also be required to create a self-reflective multimodal final version where you talk about and reflect deeply on how you see your paper demonstrating the assessment criteria fopassing work r in English 12. Ultimately, this means you will create a version of this paper that includes notes/discussion where you talk about your authorial choices, intentions, revision frustrations and accomplishments using some multimodal components (by adding links to a google doc that refers to an earlier draft, link to a video or audio file where you explain your thinking and intent for certain choices you made. First, though, we need to get in the habit of recording our thoughts and thinking in this way. So I will be asking you to include written or video reflections on each draft of Essay 2, in addition to the Capstone drafts.
One thing—I do not provide feedback on the reflective portion. The reflective portions will be read by your Capstone reader. I will however, guide you to the best of my ability with various digital tools to use for these reflective notes.
For Essay 2, please choose one of the essay questions below.
Option A |
Imagine the speaker in Walt Whitman’s poem “When I Heard the Learn’d Astronomer” was a student in one of your classes. What do you think led to the experience the speaker describes in the poem? (the answer to the question should be your thesis)
Consider how the student in the poem described their experience and the issues they had with the class. What do you think went wrong? And why? When do the student’s feelings seems to change? And why? What would have made this a different, perhaps better, experience for the student?
Then, consider how Bell Hooks, or Kwame Anthony Appiah, Frederick Douglass, Carl Rogers, or Walt Whitman (choose ONE other author from class) speaks to the issues the student in the poem brings up (choose one author to discuss and compare/contrast moments from their text with moments in the poem). Discuss where the authors might agree and disagree and explain their reasoning/thinking based on the texts we read for class (essentially, you are considering different ways of looking at the issues coming up in the poem).
Remember: Your reader has not read these texts, so it will be helpful if they get some context through a summary of both texts when appropriate before you begin to examine their specific ideas and arguments. Use relevant textual examples, quotes, and details from both texts to support your ideas and your thesis. You might also consider comparing your own experience and observations as a student when a memory or feeling comes to you and if it is relevant to the discussion and thesis of your paper.
