Students pick from a list of common psychological myths or misconceptions. Students then download the peer-reviewed journal article from Blackboard (under “Content”) that corresponds with the topic he or she chose. You will be expected to cite (in APA style) and summarize the research findings of this article in your paper. For this paper students will complete three tasks:
Before reading the article, explain your own, personal thought about the topic you chose. Do you think this statement is true (accurate) or false (inaccurate)? Do you think it’s true or false only under certain conditions? Why do you personally think this? (ex: common sense, personal history or experience, experience of a family/friend, learned/heard about this somewhere before – in school; media, etc.).
Summarize the article and results and cite in APA style.
Compare/contrast your initial thoughts to your summary of the research article. Did the article support your initial thoughts? What are your overall reactions? Are there any potential dangers to believing in psychological misconceptions? How do you think psychological misconceptions develop? What are things we can do to correct for this?
This paper should be at least three FULL type-written pages in length, double spaced, with standard one-inch margins, in 12-point Times New Roman font, and with a separate title page that includes the title of your paper and your name. (Note neither the title page OR reference page count as the three pages). Please download the writing assignment template on Blackboard and use that to assure proper formatting. You must submit this writing assignment (in either .pdf or .doc / .docx format) by uploading it to Blackboard (SafeAssign) by 11:59pm on due date listed on your course syllabus. NO LATE ASSIGNMENTS WILL BE ACCEPTED. (Yes, again I actually mean this too….) This writing assignment is worth 10 points and is mandatory.
NOTE: UPLOADING A BLANK, UNREADABLE, CORRUPTED (etc) file will result in an automatic zero. Period. It is the YOUR responsibility to upload a document that I will be able to open and read. If you are having difficulty or are unsure how to upload files correctly, please come to my office hours and I will show you how to do so. “Not knowing” how to upload (or “not knowing” the file you attached was blank/corrupt) is not an acceptable excuse. If you tend to have difficulty with technology or Blackboard, please do not wait until the last minute to upload your assignment. To summarize, I will not accept your paper late, no matter what the excuse.
NOTE: IF CAUGHT PLAGIARISING ANY PORTION OF YOUR PAPER, YOU WILL AUTOMATICALLY RECEIVE A ZERO. YOU WILL ALSO BE IN DANGER OF FAILING THE ENTIRE CLASS.
You also MUST paraphrase all information. NO DIRECT QUOTING IS ALLOWED.
NOTE: FAILURE TO PARAPHRASE AND INTERALLY CITE THE SOURCE PROVIED TO YOU VIA BLACKBOARD WILL RESULT IN AN AUTOMATIC ZERO. (yes, I will enforce this. Failure to follow this basic instruction means that you are not doing the assignment that I am requiring of you).
