Project Directions:

1. Identify and research a current and specific trend affecting the development and learning of young children today in your home community. (10 POINTS)

a. The topic should be focused and narrow. For example, a topic of “Health” or “Safety” or “Nutrition” is too broad for this project. Your project should reflect a very specific topic within one of these three categories. Your topic must be pre-approved by the instructor by completing the OLA in Blackboard. You should have three possible professional resources. Professional resources consist of scholarly websites, books, and journals. Professional resource websites typically end in .gov, .edu, .org, .us, or state websites. Blogs, even if found on a professional website are never considered professional resources and should not be used for this project.

2. Once your topic is approved, you will begin your detailed research utilizing at least two professional resources related to early childhood learning and development. (15 POINTS)

[Supportive Skill 5: Identifying and using professional resources]

a. Make sure your sources are reputable. Reputable websites typically end in .gov, .edu, .org, and .us. List your sources.

b. You are encouraged to use resources in the ECCE Lab and GTC Library. Don’t forget, your textbook can serve as a resource as well.

c. Your research must be submitted to the instructor by the due date assigned. Research must be paraphrased or summarized in your own words. You may not copy it directly from your sources.

3. After completing your research, follow these steps to write a research paper: (30 POINTS)

a. Write a detailed explanation of how the current trend is connected to young children’s characteristics and needs. In essence, think about your current trend and examine “what young children are like” and what needs do they have as it relates to the current trend you selected.

[Standard 1a: Knowing and understanding young children’s characteristics and needs]

b. Explain the multiple influences of your current trend on young children’s development and learning in your home community by giving four (4) positive or negative examples of how the trend affects their physical, cognitive, and/or social-emotional development.

[Standard 1b: Knowing and understanding the multiple influences on development and learning]

c. Based on the developmental knowledge of young children, document at least two (2) specific actions that the early childhood educator could implement within the classroom learning environment to promote and/or combat the current trend identified.

[Standard 1c: Using developmental knowledge to create healthy learning environments.]

d. In an effort to involve families in their child’s development and learning, document at least two (2) specific recommendations to promote and/or combat the current trend identifies within the home environment. Remember, your recommendations should be written in the spirit of creating and maintaining respectful and reciprocal relationships with families.

[Standard 2c: Involving families and communities in their children’s development and learning]

4. Organize your information into a 500-600 word paper, using MLA format, with attention to CUPS – Capitalization, Grammar Usage, Punctuation, and Spelling.

[Supportive Skill 2: Mastering and applying foundational concepts from general education]

5. Create and record a PSA about your topic. (15 POINTS)

a. Become an advocate for your topic by creating a video public service announcement (PSA) full of factual information, including but not limited to the four parts of the research paper described above (parts a, b, c, and d). Create a mp4 file no longer than 1 minute. Adobe Spark is highly recommended. You should speak clearly and confidently.

b. You may not break confidentiality and use children in the PSA that you are not the legal guardian of. This will result in the grade of zero (0) for the assignment

[Standard 6e: Engaging in informed advocacy for children and the profession]
