To successfully complete the research project you will need to be enterprising not least in identifying an effective research topic and developing a research plan and answering a question a set of skills that you would need to develop a business opportunity. Lastly research requires you to show integrity a specific element of this will be the ethical procedures that you are required to follow to ensure that the research you undertake is ethical.

 

One approach to identifying a suitable research project is to consult with current or formal employers about issues that are relevant and topical to the industry. Alternatively reviewing the industry press will give you an awareness of the issues facing your sector. Employers value the research project as you are able to demonstrate knowledge of the current issues facing the industry and key problem solving skills.

This will depend upon the specialism that students choose to focus upon.  Some examples of areas of research include sustainable tourism in organisations and public partnerships; marketing of hospitality organisations; events marketing; health and safety aspects of crowd management; food tourism; quality management; customer satisfaction, drivers and barriers of consumer motivation, social media usage and influences, and many more.

The module aims to engage students to identify a research question and to design and develop a research method to investigate this question presenting results in an academic research project format.

1 Develop a critical appreciation of the relevant academic discipline to identify an area suitable for

investigation using published academic sources.  Present and analyse the knowledge in a

coherent literature review.

2 Develop and design an ethically valid approach to the research question to include a

primary research exercise to gather information and data.

3 Effectively report findings, present results and discuss conclusions in relation to the theoretical

knowledge and themes identified in the literature review.

Students should submit online a copy of the ethics form SC7.  This will include an outline of your research aims and your methodology.

Students should also submit a Risk assessment.

These forms are available at the assessment point on the module blackboard site.

Whilst this is formative it is policy that research should not commence until ethics approval has been given. This will come from your supervisor and will be indicated as a pass and proceed on gradecentre.  If your supervisor is not happy with your proposal they will indicate revise and resubmit. Students should then discuss this with their supervisor.

Instructions To Students For Submission Of This Coursework

 

This will be submitted electronically on the module blackboard site.  Under the assessment tab, students will find an area titled Assessment task 1 -Literature Review. You will be able to upload a file here for your submission.  Your work will be marked by your tutor and you will be given feedback via grade centre.  This will be undertaken as soon as possible to meet the University target of 3 weeks. You will have feedback on a rubric grid which will identify your achievement against each assessment criteria.

 

Task Details

 

The student will produce a literature review.  This will involve a discussion of the relevant themes of the research project as identified in the existing literature about the chosen subject.  The themes identified must be relevant, logical and develop an understanding of the research question.  The review should result in identification of any gaps in the academic literature and  the formulation of relevant and appropriate research questions or aims and objectives.  This must be structured appropriately and fully and accurately referenced. It is expected that higher achieving work will critically analyse the academic literature in order to identify gaps in the existing knowledge which the proposed research may address or contribute to.

 

Students will be given further detail about the form and type of literature review that this could take within the lectures in semester 1.

 

Particular instructions to students

 

Word Count

The report should be 2,000 words in length.

 

The following applies:

(a) appendices should not be included in word count;

(b) tables should not be included in word count if these are used to present quantitative data, but should be included if they are constructed using words;

(c) quotations and citations should be included in word count

(d) the bibliography should not be included in the word count;

(a) abstracts and executive summaries should be included in the word count.

This is a report to outline the project research question, the context, the methodological approach, the method employed for the research, the results and the conclusions which should be related to the literature review. You should include your literature review and context from the first assessed task and formative task but this will not be assessed as part of the assessment criteria.
