Guidelines for Out-of-Class Experience Reflection

Purpose of the Assignment

The purpose of this reflection is to think about your Out-of-Class Experience in connection with your participation in an academic community and yourself as a life-long learner.


Using the same approach as was assigned for previous reflections, write a four-to-five paragraph reflection that addresses the listed points. Avoid referencing the questions or simply writing responses.

  • Each instruction and questions in bold type should be addressed thoroughly.
  • The additional questions in each category are written to assist you. Of these, discuss areas that relate to your experience.
  1. Describe the nature of the Out-of-Class Experience and summarize your participation.What did you participate in? What did you select it? What circumstances led to this? Summarize what occurred during the experience.
  2. In what ways was this experience familiarand unfamiliar (based on previous experiences that you have had)? What was like experiences you have had before? What was new or surprising to you? How was this experience like or unlike what you expected?
  3. Make academic and other connections.How does this experience relate to any topics discussed in your history or reading class (or to topics you anticipate discussing)? How does it relate to other academic disciplines? How might the experience connect with your participation in the MTSU community or in the larger society?
  4. How does this experience relate to or affect your future plans?What did you learn from this experience? How will you think or act differently (even in small ways) as a result of this experience? What future reading, research, or investigation do you plan to conduct as a result of this experience?


Artifact Inclusion


Include an artifact from your experience.  The suggested means of doing this is to include a screenshot or a picture in your Word document.  An alternate means would be to upload the artifact to the same Dropbox folder as a separate document.  Refer to the artifact in your writing and give a brief explanation to help your reader understand how it ties in.  An example is provided below.

The logo for the conference (shown below) demonstrates that people often go to academic conferences to grow professionally and to enjoy exploring a particular location.  The logo is symbolic of New Orleans and the itinerary included tours and events in the city.  While I did not sign up for any official tours, I was able to enjoy some great jazz and my family and I went to several places in the city including the iconic Café du Monde.  This was all part of the larger experience.
