Essays will be accepted late in accordance with the late policy on our course syllabus.
Essays are reasoned engagements with our course material. Each essay should isolate some aspect of the course material, explain that material (with proper citations), take a clear position on that material (i.e. state a thesis that anticipates the reasons to be provided in support of it), fully articulate good reasons in support of that position, and raise and respond to a potential objection. Essays should also contain succinct introductions and conclusions. Your target audience for these essays is a rational undergraduate student who is unfamiliar with our assigned readings, and who has no particular bias on the subject matter.
Your essay should make good use of at least two pieces of course material from our text that we have examined before the relevant essay due date. Only chapter 1 and the pieces from Part I may be used in the first essay. Those readings, plus all of the readings covered in Part II of our course text, may potentially be used for the second essay.
External research is not (necessarily) required for these papers. Excellent essays may be written using only our course texts. Claims of fact that go beyond common knowledge should either be supported by research (i.e. external research) or be made as clearly marked assumptions.
The task of these essays is to identify and explain the material you wish to engage with and to develop your own position on the matter at hand. The essays are not designed to be comprehensive, i.e. do not try to discuss everything in a thinker’s work, or in a particular unit. Do
not attempt to summarize every part of the readings. Instead, isolate and explain (in detail) the elements of the readings relevant to the argument you want to make. Think about what your reader will need to know to fully understand the argument you make.
See “points to keep in mind” (below) for further details about what your essays should (and shouldn’t) do. The material in “A Brief Introduction to Philosophical Argumentation” and “The Use of Language” should also be used in addition to these instructions. Also see “Using the Three Main Citation Styles” for basic advice on using proper citations, and consult other resources as needed to ensure you cite your sources properly using one of the three main citation styles (MLA, APA, or Chicago).
Each essay is due at 11:59pm MT via Turnitin.com on the relevant date indicated below. You may write on a question of your choosing if it is approved in advance by me:
What is the best moral theory that we have examined? Explain that theory. What makes it the best theory? How may someone object to that theory? Can that objection be sufficiently answered? If so, how? If not, how serious is that objection for the theory?
