Focus points:

  1. Is the disease viral, bacterial, fungal, worm, protozoan?
  2. What is the genus species name of the causative agent?
  3. How is it transmitted? How does a person get the infection? Is there an animal or insect vector involved?
  4. What are the general signs and symptoms of an infected person? What body systems/organs are involved?
  5. Are there any toxins or factors that increase the virulence of the pathogen? This question refers mostly to bacteria only
  6. How is the agent commonly identified? How is confirmation of agent made?
  7. How does each bacterial pathogen stain for gram, endospore, capsule, acid fast? What shape does each bacteria have?
  8. Which viruses are DNA or RNA viruses? Which are enveloped or non-eveloped?
  9. Are there any special (classic) signs or symptoms that characterize the disease/infection? (Example: Koplicks spots for measles)
  10. Is there a treatment or cure available? What are the most common antibiotics given?

11 . Is there a vaccine available? Do not include experimental or trial vaccines

  1. How can transmission be prevented?
  2. Which diseases lead to elevated levels of IgE and eosinophilia?

If you cannot find the information in your textbook, first go to the CDC and WHO websites.  If the information is not available there, only search reputable medical online references.

Useful Information:

Focus Pt#5: All gram negative bacteria produce endotoxins, some gram negative bacteria also produce exotoxins.  Gram positive bacteria do not produce endotoxins, but may produce exotoxins, not all gram positive bacteria produce exotoxins

Focus Pt#13: Most fungal and worm infections lead to elevated levels of IgE and Eosinophils.

Examine Lecture Study Guide #5, determine if there are other trends in the pathogen list that will make it easier for you to remember the information
