Think of this as a 4 – 5page guide that would be useful to anyone entering your field. (An example would be next year’s highly intelligent freshmen.)

To prepare this informative document, you will have to gather information on the writing specific to your field.

You can think of your “field” as either your major or your career path. If you are pre-med, for example, you might want to focus on a specific career such as Anesthesiology. If you intend to dance on Broadway, you might want to write on the more general field of Performing Arts as a whole.

You should draw from credible websites and review the scholarly research from your field. Seek out the professional organizations that define and advocate for your profession. The APA, for example, is not just a paper format. It is the American Psychological Association, the core organization for the psychology field in the United States (that happens to publish a widely used style sheet for academic papers.) Your field should have at least one important organization with a website that you can draw from.

You have the option ofinterviewing at least one person who works in your field and who knows its writing tasks, literacies, conventions, and controversies.

Multiple interviews could make this easier to write in the long run, so early in the writing process brainstorm and then contact your teachers and family friends who could be useful.  Ask them for leads for further interviews.

Remember that all primary research has to be done safely this semester.

Remember, as well, that I am happy to consult via email or google meet if you are not turning up the information and examples that you are hoping tp.

Write a guide on writing in your field.

Next year’s freshman class.

Though a friendly writing style and a hook should help the reader here, remember that this particular reader needs to be informed more than entertained.

Use MLA for this.

Organization / Points to Include

  1. The day-to-day written communication in your field.

Include insight into a document that gets used pretty much every day. Who writes it and who is it written for? How is this rhetorical?

This might not be traditional alphabetical writing. It might be a chart or graph, a technical drawing or schematic, a video . . . Keep all possibilities for written communication in play here. Assume that “writing” takes place on screens as well as paper.

  1. Special projects.

These might include conference presentations, websites, or reports that get prepared no more than once a year. They might address safety or best practices that get implemented every day, but do not get discussed or written about or reestablished every day.

Again, establish who writes it and who it is written for. How does it use rhetoric to reach its intended audience?

3.A piece ofacademic and/or philosophical writing that has changed your field as it exists today or is about to.

Here, account for the top scholarly journals in your field.  What do they publish, and how must it be written? How do they define your field and where it is heading?

What is at least one current, relevant discussion going on in your field?

This is the writing often published by and read by your professors.Though it is often difficult, getting a sense of this should make writing a credible paper in your field, next semester or years from now, easier.

Have some insights into who contributes to this writing and how a person would establish sufficient ethos to join these elite ranks.

In Your Conclusion

Make recommendations to the reader who wants to write well in this field. This might focus on classes to take or skills to develop.

Graphics are fine in the document as long as they contribute to the information rather than distract from it. I’m still looking for 4-5 pages words of alphabetical writing.

As I evaluate your work, I’ll have the following concerns:

  • Does the document include a broad scope of writing tasks and explain them in sufficient detail, going beyond what the writing is about to address the forms the writing takes?

  • Is the document clear and on task, organizing information well without unwarranted repetition or tangents?

  • Is the information accurate?

  • Are all sources framed within the text and properly documented on a works cited or references page?

  • Is the writing style appropriately professional while retaining the sort of directness, clarity, specificity and sensitivity we would expect from a human being trying to help us understand our individual fields?

  • Do surface mechanics lead to clarity rather than confusion?
