Social workers are known for being helpful and for constantly giving back to others in a time of need. I feel it in my heart that I possess the gift that those individuals have. I would like to share it with others and pursue a career within the field. Growing up in my hometown Homestead, Florida, I witnessed a multitude of individuals and families who struggled through difficult times throughout their life. Such individuals did not choose to be in tough situations, but it was due to the fact that they did not know how to access the resources that they needed. As a result, witnessing those individuals struggle for most of my life inspired me and helped me decide the career path that Inow, want to pursue.

  1. Work experiences (paid or volunteer) that included some form of helping will assist students to determine if social work is a career of interest to them. Please briefly describe experiences you have had, or plan to engage in, that show your interest in and readiness for a career in social work.

Currently today I am a part of a social work group chat on WhatsApp that was formed by a current student that is attending FAU. This group chat is called “FAU SW student group” in this group chat we talk about what opportunities are out there for students who want to pursue a career and social work. By keeping each other informed of opportunities as the prevail, we stay abreast of emerging trends and changes in the social work environment. The group gives us the opportunity to discuss issues pertaining to the social work field. Although it is a group text chat, we all are able to keep each other informed in a matter of seconds. Through the group, I am able to discern ideas related to social work and hence laying the ground for future practice. The rationale for forming joining the group was that social work environment is fast changing and so, the need hone skills routinely. In this way, I am able to grasp the intrigues of ensuing work. In other words, the serves as a platform for mentorship and has given me the pedestal to approach the social work ahead with confidence.

  1. Describe the purpose and responsibilities of a social worker, considering information in the NASW Code of Ethics.

Service. It is a key aim of all social workers to fix social ills and support others. The meaning from which all other principles of social work derive is support. Social workers often raise others’ concerns above their own professional desires and utilize their expertise and experiences to support individuals (from schooling and experience). In addition to their paying services, social workers also donate their resources, without promise of financial compensation.

Social Justice. On behalf of the poor, the voiceless, and those who are not willing to speak for themselves, social workers speak. Themes such as hunger, homelessness, bigotry, abuse, and other types of oppression are also targeted. Social workers provide those pursuing dignity with knowledge, support and other services, and they teach people who might not be personally discriminated against in the hardships of the less fortunate.

Preserving Dignity and Worth of the Person. Every individual, with different cultural and social values, is different. Social workers are respectful of these distinctions, treating each citizen with integrity and consideration and supporting the willingness and potential of their consumers to meet their own needs and maximize their personal circumstances. Social workers ought to be mindful of their responsibility to both particular consumers and to society as a whole, and pursue alternatives for their consumers that serve the larger needs of society as well.

Nurturing Human Relationships. Social workers match persons who seek support with agencies and professionals who will offer the necessary assistance. Social workers understand that it can be a valuable mechanism for facilitating progress to foster individual interactions, and they specialize in involving new collaborators who can develop.

  1. Communication skills are essential to good social work practice. How good are your verbal communication skills? Your writing skills? What do you need to improve?

I can state that I possess intermediate verbal communication skills. I am not only articulate but can command conversations with much ease. I can discuss issues with my audiences without veering off the subjects. More importantly, I embrace the art of listening before responding to my subjects. Given these uptakes, I can stay on the course of discussions and interact with a diverse mix of audiences and still remain relevant. My writing skills are exceptional. Having honed my writing skills for some time now, I can write concisely and with proper diction and tome. My writings are able to resonate with the subject matter as well as the audience. Clearly, I need to improve my verbal communication skills to an expert conversationalist. I feel that I should learn more to expand my horizon given the multiple ways of communication.

  1. Becoming a good social worker requires the ability to accept feedback. Describe one instance where you accepted feedback and then made improvements.

During a three-month volunteer program in my local community, I got to learn the importance of accepting feedback in social work. In one instance, my field manager kept reminding me of the need to have weekly reviews as a way of strengthening our work. From the feedback I received on the progress of our, sometimes laced with complements or tenets for improvement, our department acted on the milestones and emerged the best performing unit. The bottom-line here is that accepting feedback enabled me to scale new heights following recommendations from the management.

  1. Being a good social worker requires that you be willing to work with diverse populations. How do you feel about working with people who are different from yourself? Give at least one example of how you have related to someone who was different from you in terms of race, sexual orientation, religion, or other characteristics.

Working with people different from myself makes me feel that the need for flexibility, that social work is not just about me but a collective responsibility. Through working with different people, I am able to extend my social matrix as I learn their socio-cultural and political matrix. Working with diverse populations gives me the feeling of tolerance, having to accommodate people with divergent views, actions, and demeanor. An example that I was involved in is when I attended a two-week workshop. Drawing people from various countries, I was placed in a group with Asians, Africans, Americans, and Europeans. Initially apprehensive of the social mix, I was able to adjust and cooperate with them throughout my training.

  1. Discuss your behavior as a student. Do you observe deadlines, meet attendance requirements, treat instructors and peers with respect? Why do you think it is important to demonstrate these characteristics as a student social worker?

As a student, I am aggressive and meet my deadlines for the most part. Understanding the role of attending lectures, I have often met all the attendance requirements of my school. Also, I acknowledge the role of liaising with my peers and instructors. I respect these groups as they are the core tenets of my success. Demonstrating these attributes as a social worker makes me admirable since people are likely to identify with my demeanor as a reflection of my future work.
