Academic Position Paper Proposal
Defining the question:
In the debate that I analyzed in Unit 2, it included all levels of argument; however, the rhetors are primarily arguing at the level of definition which is also where stasis is lost. I see a great amount of connections between metacognition and my major because metacognition is essential for critical thinking in which is a crucial and importantskillof a nurse. I want to relate metacognition to the nursing field, but more specifically, I want to research how metacognition is used in nursing education. In the debate about whether metacognition has beneficial or detrimental effects, should metacognition be used in nursing education to increase or improve skills of a nursing student?
Debate and Stance:
In the debate that I analyzed, the rhetors agree that there are many factors that influence our brains resulting in our thoughts and actions. Furthermore, in this debate, the rhetors mainly focus on whether metacognition has positive or negative effects on an individual’s brain. For example, Mary Davenport explains that when students learn to think and reflect on their writing, they will become more successful writers moving forward. Following this, Steven Handel explains that it is likely that one’s attention will shift to unimportant measures if one seeks to increase mindfulness because the brain is not designed to attain all the information that it comes across. Additionally, the debate is split on which the rhetors agree on definition or not. For example, the claim that Davenport makes is supported by Jay Jay, in which he believes that increased mindfulness is beneficial to becoming a better writer. Although, this idea is not held universally. Shaffer disagrees with Davenport and Jay Jay, but he does agree with Handel. Furthermore, Shaffer explains that our consciousness in situations can result in negative outcomes rather than positive ones which is supported by Handel’s claim. Personally, I share common ground with Davenport and Jay Jay in which theyclaim that metacognition can have beneficial effects on an individual’s education in which I believe is very important for a nursing student. On the other hand, I do not believe that metacognition can hurt a nursing student. Furthermore, I believe that the lack of metacognition as a nursing studentcan have extremely detrimental effects in nursing practice through the care of patients, leading to possible life-threatening mistakes. Therefore, I must disagree with the claims made by Handel and Shaffer.I plan to use some of the information that Davenport and Jay Jayprovided that help increase metacognition for students in general.

My intended audience is nursing students or potential nursing students and professors in nursing education. I believe that my audience should be people who are directly involved with the education of a nursing student.
Claim and Purpose:
In my paper, I want to make the claim that metacognition can be used to improve the learning of nursing studentsthat results in betterskills for nursing practice. This is a claim of definition in which it explains how metacognition can be used for nursing education. My rhetorical purpose is to explain and describe the benefits that metacognition creates for students in the nursing field. This is appropriate for academic readers who want to pursue a nursing career or for nursing teachers who want to help improve the skills of their students because it offers an understanding of how metacognition can be beneficial to success in the nursing field.
I am personally very interested in the nursing career field, as I am currently enrolled in the college of nursing here at the University of Tennessee. I have grown up being surrounded by nurses in which both my mom and brother are registered nurses. Their constant passion and care for others has had a great impact on me; consequently, I have always wanted to pursue a career in nursing, and it has become more evident to me over the past few years. Because of this, I am very interested in how metacognition can help nursing students like myself.
I still need to research and find nursing student specific reasons why metacognition is beneficial. Although I have already read and gained some information on how metacognition has a positive effect on students in general, I need to do further research to find how metacognition will be usefulto a nursing student in particular, specifically in nursing practice. Furthermore, I will need to research some specific nursing practices to better explain how metacognition will be helpful in improving the skills necessary for that practice. I do not know of any counter arguments, but I will research this too, so that I may understand the other point of views in regard to this topic.
