Switzerland

2. Reason for selecting this country.

When making the list of three countries that I was interested in researching, I chose Ireland, Switzerland and Canada. Unfortunately Ireland got taken so I went to my second option and chose the country of Switzerland. I chose this country because of its large population, diverse community and of course, its beautiful landmarks and scenery. Switzerland is a country that although I may not be familiar with, have always dreamed of visiting. I am excited to explore more about this country and the education system..

I think Switzerland is very interesting based on the fact that it seems very basic which makes it very recognizable. This flag is one of two official flags of sovereign states. This flag is made up of a red square which includes a white cross in  the middle of it. The issue with the flag is that the red and white colors are not technically defined by the Swiss laws which causes them to change the shades of the colors. Although all of the characteristics of the flag don’t have  a specific meaning, there are many theories.

1. Geography

Switzerland is mainly made up of hilly, mountainous and hilly terrain with large waters in the central plateau. Because of the mountainous terrain of Switzerland, it is known that the open air would give out the yodeling and echoing effect. Switzerland is located in Europe and borders Germany, France, Italy, Austria, Liechtenstein all in which shares its three main languages with Switzerland. 63.7 percent speak German, 19.2 percent French, 7.6 percent Italian, 0.6 percent Romansch, and 8.9 percent other languages. Switzerland is divided into three national regions, which consist of; the Jura Mountains, the central lowlands,the lake of constance, the lake of Geneva and the alps. In the lowlands of switzerland is where the capital of switzerland is located, Bern.

In this photo you can observe some of the information that I talked about in part A; which includes the surrounding areas such as Germany, France, Austria and Italy. You can also notice the capital, Bern. Another thing that you can notice on the map below is the three different regions that make up Switzerland.

III. History of Country (not history of education) 

1. Overview of important events.

Switzerland is one of the oldest nations in Europe. The country grew as more regions were slowly added. During the Reformation and Counter Reformation education was mainly categorized for the upper class. In the 1740’s Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi developed a basic pedagogical approach that became used in many western countries and even eventually spread into the United states. After WWII Switzerland’s education system was very broken. Their plan was to fix the education system time after time. The Swiss Conference of Cantonal Directors of Education was restructured and given a secretariat and four regional organizations. In the 1980’s  the laws were abolished and became more flexible with how the education system works; such as adding more classes to the cirriculum. In 1988 the percentage of students that left school with a diploma became 11% to 18.  Also, becoming a teacher in Switzerland is different than in America. In order to get an education you must go to college and then attend a teacher training school, all in which take about 5 years.

Switzerland has a large population of 8.2 million people. Being that it has such a large enough population, this means that in order to have their political leader, they get to have a say in the process. Federal Council, is the executive power of Switzerland. It is made up of seven federal councillors from several Swiss political parties, all in which are elected by the federal assembly every four years and share the same duties as the head of state. Federal Councillors rotate and every year one takes on the role of president. The political function is made up of four different parties; the Swiss People’s Party, Social Democrats, Liberals and the Christian Democratic Party.
