Holy Sepulchre Historical
The Holy Sepulchre church stood in the middle of the resurrection church that was circular, with several chapels linked to the church. The church was enclosed by a wall that protected that was constructed ten years after the crucifixion of Jesus (“Church of The Holy Sepulchre | History, Significance, & Facts” 2020). The church’s site is believed to be the place where the crucifixion and burial of Jesus took place outside the City of Jerusalem. Saint Helena, Constantine Mother, discovered the true cross of Jesus Christ in 326. The cross was taken to the Holy Sepulchre. A chapel was built inside the church in honor of Saint Helena by the crusaders.
The Holy Sepulchre was used to house the holy ground where Jesus was crucified and buried. At the entrance of the church, there is a holy stone where it is believed that Jesus’s body was cleansed before burial (Hays 2020). There is also an Educule at the center of the church that houses the grave of Christ. Inside the church, there are also chapels where priests lead a sermon, while some chapels were constructed in memory of the great women close to Jesus Christ. The church was also used as a place of worship where pilgrims from all over the world would gather around and walk in Christ’s footsteps.
The people of Jerusalem were believed to having their burial services done on higher ground, such as high. It is believed that the Holy Sepulture floor sits on the Golgotha’s Rock, which is a hilly area outside the city of Jerusalem. People of Jerusalem used to bury the dead inside tombs after their bodies have been prepared well and covered with a clean cloth (RESURRECTION and JOHNSON 2020). Inside the Holy Sepulture next to Simon’s tomb, two empty Jewish tombs can be seen clearly, providing evidence about the site of the church being on a holy ground where Jesus of Nazareth was crucified, buried, and resurrected.
