This module will help you develop the key graduate attributes, in particular because you will have the overall responsibility of managing the project and your research, it illhelp you build your confidence in your abilities, it will be necessary to be creative as a key aspect of undertaking primary research is creativity and responding to challenges along the way.  To undertake a research project will require you have to resilience to overcome the challenges of collecting and analysing data and answering your research question. To successfully complete the research project you will need to be enterprising not least in identifying an effective research topic and developing a research plan and answering a question a set of skills that you would need to develop a business opportunity. Lastly research requires you to show integrity a specific element of this will be the ethical procedures that you are required to follow to ensure that the research you undertake is ethical.

 

One approach to identifying a suitable research project is to consult with current or formal employers about issues that are relevant and topical to the industry. Alternatively reviewing the industry press will give you an awareness of the issues facing your sector. Employers value the research project as you are able to demonstrate knowledge of the current issues facing the industry and key problem solving skills.

This will depend upon the specialism that students choose to focus upon.  Some examples of areas of research include sustainable tourism in organisations and public partnerships; marketing of hospitality organisations; events marketing; health and safety aspects of crowd management; food tourism; quality management; customer satisfaction, drivers and barriers of consumer motivation, social media usage and influences, and many more.

Students should submit online a copy of the ethics form SC7.  This will include an outline of your research aims and your methodology.

Students should also submit a Risk assessment.

Whilst this is formative it is policy that research should not commence until ethics approval has been given. This will come from your supervisor and will be indicated as a pass and proceed on gradecentre.  If your supervisor is not happy with your proposal they will indicate revise and resubmit. Students should then discuss this with their supervisor.

Task Details

 

The student will produce a literature review.  This will involve a discussion of the relevant themes of the research project as identified in the existing literature about the chosen subject.  The themes identified must be relevant, logical and develop an understanding of the research question.  The review should result in identification of any gaps in the academic literature and  the formulation of relevant and appropriate research questions or aims and objectives.  This must be structured appropriately and fully and accurately referenced. It is expected that higher achieving work will critically analyse the academic literature in order to identify gaps in the existing knowledge which the proposed research may address or contribute to.

 

Students will be given further detail about the form and type of literature review that this could take within the lectures in semester 1.

50% weight Demonstrates a critical appreciation of the relevant academic discipline using published academic sources.	An excellent clear, logically constructed summary of the key academic literature in this field outlining the debates concerning the topic. The link between the research questions or hypothesis is fully supported by the review.
40% weight Present and critically analyse the knowledge in a coherent literature review which identifies gaps in knowledge and develops appropriate  research aims or questions.	An original and valid research topic/problem developed supported by an excellent justification and evidence for its relevance.
